Double Board Certified and Harvard Trained TMS Physician

Double Board-Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine

Dr. Ravikumar Bhalavat is a double board-certified Psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist, trained at Louisiana State University (LSU). His clinical experience spans thousands of patients across diverse backgrounds, providing him with a deep understanding of both the strengths—and the limitations—of traditional mental health care systems.

Early in his training, while managing a high-volume patient population, Dr. Bhalavat recognized a recurring gap in care: many patients were receiving fragmented, time-limited treatment that focused on short-term symptom relief rather than long-term stability and recovery. This realization became the foundation of his clinical philosophy and continues to shape his approach today.

Dr. Bhalavat has extensive experience treating adults and geriatric populations, with particular expertise in complex psychiatric conditions, including treatment-resistant mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. He believes that effective psychiatric care is rarely defined by a single intervention. Instead, meaningful progress comes from a thoughtful integration of evidence-based medication management, psychotherapy, innovation, and a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Bhalavat has been actively involved in community-focused initiatives and academic contributions, including work supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD/IDSD). These experiences have reinforced his commitment to delivering care that is not only clinically effective, but also compassionate, individualized, and forward-thinking.

Dr. Bhalavat is a strong advocate for innovation in mental health care. He believes that the true goal of treatment is not simply symptom control, but a meaningful improvement in overall quality of life. Psychiatry does not offer a single “quick fix”—but with the right combination of science, personalized care, and innovation, lasting progress is achievable.

At Peacemind Physicians, his mission is to move beyond the constraints of insurance-driven models and provide a more thoughtful, patient-centered approach to care. Through longer visits, deeper understanding, and individualized treatment strategies, Dr. Bhalavat strives to help patients achieve stability, growth, and a better quality of life.

Clinical Research & Leadership

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Bhalavat has extensive experience as a principal investigator in psychiatric clinical research. He has led and contributed to multiple studies focused on advancing treatment options for serious mental health conditions, including:

  • Principal Investigator – Alto Bipolar Depression Study
  • Principal Investigator – The Reliance Study (Depression)
  • Principal Investigator – OASIS Study (Schizophrenia, sponsored by Alkermes)

Through this work, he remains at the forefront of emerging treatments and innovations in Psychiatry, integrating evidence-based advancements into patient care when appropriate.

Clinical Expertise

Dr. Bhalavat’s approach reflects both depth and precision. His areas of expertise include:

  • Psychopharmacology (advanced medication management)
  • Addiction medicine (conservative, safety-focused approach)
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
  • Spravato (esketamine) treatment
  • Treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder
  • Complex psychiatric presentations across adult and geriatric populations

He believes that effective psychiatric care requires more than a single intervention. Instead, treatment is built on a combination of clinical expertise, individualized planning, and a strong therapeutic relationship.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Bhalavat practices a holistic and individualized approach to Psychiatry. He recognizes that no two patients are the same, and that meaningful progress comes from understanding the full picture—medical, psychological, and social.

  • Personalized, non–one-size-fits-all care
  • Conservative and thoughtful use of medications
  • Long-term outcomes over short-term symptom relief
  • Collaboration with other medical specialists when needed

By working outside of insurance-driven constraints, he provides longer visits, direct access, and attention that supports deeper understanding and better outcomes.

Innovation & Digital Health

Dr. Bhalavat has a strong interest in advancing the future of mental health care through technology. He is currently developing a digital health platform designed to:

  • Improve patient engagement and continuity of care
  • Reduce administrative burden for physicians
  • Enhance efficiency in clinical research and patient recruitment

This work reflects his broader mission to improve both access and quality in psychiatric care through innovation.

Professional Involvement

  • Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA)
  • Member, Maryland Psychiatric Society
  • Member, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI)
  • Executive Board Member of Maryland AAPI

Dr. Bhalavat remains actively engaged in the psychiatric community and is committed to advancing knowledge, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
